Ruling of Appointing a Jinn as a Protector

Question

Is it permissible to make dua to Allah to make a jinn one's protector in the sense of a bodyguard?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We do not consider the supplication mentioned by the questioner to be permissible, as Allah has sufficed the Muslim by prescribing to him invocations for protection throughout the day and night, such as the morning and evening supplications. Hence, there is absolutely no need at all to seek protection through a jinn. One example is the supplication mentioned in the Sunnah: “Bismillahi alladhi la yaḍurru maʿa ismihi shay’un fī al-arḍi wa la fī as-sama’i, wa huwa as-Samiʿu al-ʿAlim.” (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the sky can harm). It is narrated in a Hadith: “Whoever says at the beginning of his day or night: Bismillahi alladhi la yaḍurru maʿa ismihi shay’un fī al-arḍi wa la fī as-sama’i, wa huwa as-Samiʿu al-ʿAlim, three times, nothing will harm him that day or night.” [Narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari in his Al-Adab al-Mufrad]

Additionally, Allah has appointed angels to protect His servants and to guard them from harm that He has not decreed for them. As Allah says: “For him (the servant), there are successive (angels) before and behind him, who protect him by the command of Allah.” (Ar-Ra'd: 11)

Allah also says: “And He sends His protectors over you.” (Al-An'am:61)

Ibn Kathir may Allaah have mercy upon him explains in his Tafsir (interpretation of the Quran): “And He sends His protectors over you,” meaning angels who protect the body of the human being, as in the verse: ‘For him (there are) successive (angels) before and behind him, protecting him by the command of Allah.’” [End quote]

Al-Baghawi may Allaah have mercy upon him also mentions in his Tafsir: “‘They protect him by the command of Allah,’ i.e., with the command of Allah, which means that they guard him with Allah’s permission as long as the decree of Allah comes. Once the decree of Allah comes, they leave him. Another interpretation is that they protect him from whatever Allah has commanded them to guard him against.

Allah knows best.
